The Pakistan-administered part of the internationally disputed territory of Kashmir is officially called Azad Kashmir (meaning free Kashmir). الاسم الرسمي للجزء الذي يخضع للحكم الباكستاني في إقليم كشيمر المُتنازَع عليه دوليًا هو آزاد كشمير (ويعني كشمير الحرة).
Azad Kashmir is part of the greater Kashmir region, which is the subject of a long-running conflict between Pakistan and India. إقليم آزاد كشمير هو جزء من منطقة كشمير الكبرى، التي ظلت محل نزاع بين الهند وباكستان منذ انفصال الدولتين.
Following the partition of India, many came from Pakistan especially the Punjab and Azad Kashmir in addition to the Indian state of Gujarat. بعد تقسيم الهند قدم العديد من المسلمين من باكستان وخاصة البنجاب وآزاد كشمير بالإضافة إلى ولاية كجرات الهندية.
The northern areas and Azad Kashmir lie mainly in Central Asia along the edge of the Indian plate and hence are prone to violent earthquakes where the two tectonic plates collide. تقع آزاد كشمير والمناطق الشمالية في آسيا الوسطى على طول حافة الصفيحة الهندية وهي بالتالي معرضة للزلازل العنيفة حيث يوجد إثنتان من تكتونيات الصفائح التصادمية.
